The race was sponsored by the Poquoson Education Foundation & Kiwanis Club of Poquoson.  The Poquoson Run for the Bulls 5K was also the 8th race in the 11-race Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix for 2022.

The course for the Poquoson Run with the Bulls 5K started at Poquoson High School, ran on the roads in Poquoson before finishing at Poquoson Primary School.  The course is a USATF Certified 5K - VA14036RT - and was run correctly by the 5K runners.

Conditions at race time were perfect for running; partly cloudy with a little breeze and a temperature of 56 at race start.  188 runners and walkers entered the event with 101 runners completing the 5K and 56 walkers completing the 2 Mile.

First CAA Win Eludes Pirates as Maine Tops HU 31-24

(HAMPTON) – The Hampton Pirates dropped their second attempt for an initial Colonial Athletic Association win on Saturday, falling to Maine 31-24 at Armstrong Stadium.

The Black Bears (1-4, 1-1 CAA) overcame a seven-point deficit at the end of the third quarter to score the game’s final 14 points and pull out their first win of the season. Both touchdowns came from junior sparkplug Freddie Brock, who delivered on a seven-yard run to tie the score at 24, and then on a seven-yard reception from Joe Fagnano for the game clincher.

The visitors were potent on offense, gaining 449 total yards, with Fagnano completing 19 of 24 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown. 

However, the Pirates had its way offensively, with QB Malcolm Mays averaging almost twenty yards per completion (12 of 27, 230 yards) with three touchdowns, two to senior receiver Jadakis Bonds (seven catches, 141 yards).

In retrospect, Hampton coach Robert Prunty was optimistic about his team, which travels to upstate New York next weekend to face the University of Albany.

“They just made more plays than we did,” said Prunty, whose team is now 3-2. “it goes to show, we were picked to finish in the middle of the conference, and we’re getting close. Right now, we’re the underdogs in every game we play.” Asked about the remainder of the schedule, which includes games against conference powerhouses Villanova and William and Mary, he added, “All dogfights.”

The teams traded early touchdowns, mirroring the back-and-forth nature of the game. On their opening possession, Mays found speedster receiver Tyler Thompson (Woodside HS) open for a 40-yard score, capping a six-play, 80-yard drive. Maine answered on the ensuing drive, with Elijah Barnwell finishing off an 11-play, 81-yard series with a four-yard push into the end zone.

Another Mays bomb, to Bonds, netted a 67-yard score, but the Black Bears recovered, with a quick hitting eight-play, 88-yard scoring drive, punctuated with a 27-yard run by Zavier Scott.

A leaping interception by Maine linebacker Adrian Otero set up a Cole Baker 21-yard field goal to push the Black Bears into the lead for the first time at 17-14, which was the score as both teams headed into intermission.

The pace threatened to slow down in the second half, with the defenses setting the tone. However, Hampton’s effort resulted in a crucial turnover when KeShaun Moore sacked Maine QB Joe Fagnano, who fumbled, with the Pirates’ DeShaun Faulk recovering the loose ball at the Black Bears 19. The Maine defense almost thwarted the scoring drive, negating two chances by Hampton QB Christopher Zellous to score from the 1, and when an illegal formation pushed the Pirates back to the 6, it appeared that the hosts would settle for a game tying field goal.

Instead, Mays rolled left and fired a dart to Bonds who was running a corner route. Bonds adeptly dropped both feet before falling out of bounds to secure the touchdown.

CNU Wins First NJAC Contest 20-14 Over Rowan

NEWPORT NEWS – The CNU Captains opened their New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule with a well needed win, topping the Rowan Profs from the Garden State 20-14 at Towne Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Captains pushed their record to 3-2 and will enjoy a bye week before traveling to Kean College to face the Cougars on October 15.

Rowan is considered to be one of the top teams in the NJAC, and the win immediately puts CNU into the upper echelon of teams.

“It doesn’t matter who we play in the conference,” said Captain coach Paul Crowley. “We have to be at our best each and every week.”

However, the Captains opened up a 20-0 lead entering the fourth quarter before allowing two late Rowan touchdowns to make it a one-score game with 5:45 remaining. For the season, CNU has allowed 52 of its opponents’ 86 points in the final period, but Crowley retains confidence in his team’s finishing ability.

“We may just get too conservative once we get a lead,” said Crowley, now in his second year at the helm.

The Captains came out strong after the opening kickoff, with Matt Dzierski’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Colin Hart capping a ten-play, 91-yard drive. However, Ryan Castle’s extra point sailed wide and CNU led 6-0.

Rowan also started its offensive day with a methodical march, one which was halted on fourth-and-three from the CNU 30 as junior rover Logan Baker stonewalled Prof running back James Fara after a two-yard gain.

The Dzierski to Hart connection worked again early in the second quarter as the junior play caller found his top receiver on a fly pattern down the right side for a 65-yard gain to the Rowan 2. Two short rushes and an incompletion left the Captains with fourth-and-goal at the 1. CNU started their next play as a jet sweep to the left, but Dzierski kept the ball and zipped through a seam in the middle for the Captains’ second touchdown.

For Hart, the long pass play was the result of preparation. “We thought (the matchup) was something that we could take advantage of. I probably didn’t need to make a double move, and will probably hear about it from the receiver coaches this week.”

There was a 15-minute delay just before halftime as Rowan defensive back Kevin Vandever suffered a severe neck injury while attempting a tackle. Both teams took knees as the soggy turf made it difficult to roll a stretcher with the 180-pound player off the field. Eventually, an ambulance had to drive across Kelchner Field, stopping to retrieve Vandever and drive him to Riverside Hospital.

Dzierski, who gained 24 rushing yards in the first half, showed off a touch of speed on CNU’s opening second-half drive. After dropping back, Dzierski found another hole up the middle, eluded an initial tackler, and then outraced the entire Rowan defense to the end zone, for a 61-yard score.

“I went for an inside zone, and then tried to bounce out,” said Dzierski, who led the Captains with 132 rushing yards. In spite of the field conditions, he didn’t have traction problems. “It’s something that we worked on all week, and the coaches reminded us to keep our feet out and weight over us.”

Rowan refused to crumble, in spite of trailing 20-0 as the fourth quarter began, as the Captains allowed two touchdowns, both on James Fara runs from one and nine yards. Yet, with 2:30 remaining, the Captains were able to convert a crucial fourth-and-two from the Rowan 43, with Dzierski carrying the ball for five yards.

Apprentice Tops Christopher Newport in Inaugural "Battle of Newport News"

NEWPORT NEWS – In a wild-and-woolly finish, the Christopher Newport Captains almost overcame a 10-point deficit in the game’s final 2:38, but fell to the Apprentice School 38-35 in the first-ever meeting between the two teams from Newport News.

The game featured 35 fourth-quarter points, and appeared to be decided when Apprentice quarterback Mason Tatum sprinted through the middle of the Captain defense to score on a 36-yard run, pushing the Builder lead to 38-28.

“Without our offensive line, we wouldn’t be here,” said Tatum of the Builders, who have won their first three games. Speaking of the touchdown, he added, “I saw the way their defense was moving and decided to call my own number.”

Yet, the Captains (1-2), who had previously overcome a 17-7 deficit with two touchdowns, refused to back down. Matt Dzierski (15-23, 234 yards, three TD’s) found Trey Hayes for 27 yards, followed by a 12-yard completion to Colin Hart, and then a 29-yarder to Hart, capping a five-play, 68-yard drive in just 50 seconds.

“We did a better job blocking for (Tatum) in the second half,” said first-year Apprentice coach Vincent Brown.

The first onside kick, at 31-28, went out of bounds, but the Captains would get a second opportunity after Hart’s touchdown and almost grabbed the bouncing ball before it jumped out of bounds.

The two teams traded early touchdowns, with the visiting Builders scoring first. A 27-yard pass from Tatum to a wide open Ta’Kevion Petty saved the Builders drive on third-and three from the CNU 45. Three plays later, Nick Pierce caught Tatum’s pass over the middle, with Jeremiah Morgan’s extra point giving Apprentice an early 7-0 lead.

The Captains knotted the score on their next drive, with Gunner White busting through the middle for an 18-yard rushing score. White took advantage of the gaping hole left as the lone Apprentice safety slid to his right to cover a CNU receiver left wide open in the formation. 

Freshman running back Willis Walton pushed the lead back to seven with a five-yard burst through the middle, and Jeremiah Morgan’s 38-yard field goal bumped the margin to 10. At 17-7, and 2:37 remaining in the first half, the Builders were threatening to take the game’s momentum into the locker room at intermission, a feeling that was exacerbated as the Captains labored on their final drive.

However, CNU quarterback Matt Dzierski, who had completed three of eight passes for a mere 18 yards, found his rhythm. With third-and-eight from the Captain 48, Dzierski found Colin Hart for a crucial 28-yard gain, and then eluded a strong Apprentice rush to find Xander Jedlick (Ocean Lakes) for a 24-yard score. Ryan Castle’s extra point ended the first half with the Builders leading 17-14.

MULBERRY ISLAND HALF MARATHON AND 5K RESULTS

The 41st Annual Mulberry Island Half-Marathon, sponsored by the Peninsula Track Club, took place yesterday on the grounds of Ft. Eustis.

Many of the finishers were from the soldiers of the base, but the showing of civilians was evident.

In the half-marathon, eighteen-year-old Case Busse placed first with a time of 1:30.43, and Busse was followed to the finish by Hampton's Matthew Armenta (1:33:03) and the sprightly sixty-one year old Kelvin Anderson of Newport News (1:33:13).

Jennifer Gardiner of Richmond paced the women, winning in 1:46:40. Hampton's Karen Sanzo was second in 1:50:54, with Norma Phillips of Williamsburg taking third in an even 2 hours, two minutes.

Joshua Perry, 19, won the 5K in 16:58, with fellow Ft. Eustis resident Nicholas Stroobosscher taking the runner-up spot in 17:20, and Smithfield's Victor Flemming placing third in 18:42.

Gretal Kinney led a Ft. Eustis women's sweep in 25:18. Tresia Huell (25:40) and Macalah Williams (26:45) finishing out the top-three.

Moore Selected as VPCC Athletic Director

Virginia Peninsula Community College, formerly Thomas Nelson Community College, named Chris Moore its new Director of Athletics and Student Activities on Monday, July 18. 

Moore, who attended the College in 2008-10, has been the men’s basketball coach at the College since 2018. In the 2021-22 season, he led the Gators to a 16-1 record overall and their first conference title since 2015.

“I’m excited,” said Moore, whose new role begins July 25. “I’m big on community and I have a passion for the College, being that I went there.”

College President Dr. Towuanna Porter Brannon said two those factors stand out.

“Mr. Moore’s passion for developing athletic scholars is apparent by the ways he coached and mentored our men’s basketball team players,” she said. “In addition to his role in athletics, Mr. Moore has been a collaborative leader – supporting the College’s enrollment, fundraising, community engagement, and marketing initiatives. We look forward to expanding our athletics and student activities programming under his leadership."

In late April, the College announced it will add six sports in the next three years. That is one of the reasons Moore applied for the position

“I think the president’s vision of it all is evident,” he said, adding he wants to help “propel athletics in the right direction.”

Moore is well-known on the Peninsula. He graduated from Warwick High School, where he played basketball. He also attended Virginia Wesleyan College and Chowan University.

With the addition of softball and women’s volleyball programs for the 2022-23 academic year, Moore already has his first assignment.

“My first task is trying to get some coaches that can come in here and continue what the rest of us have done this past year, which is win,” he said. “But also bring in some quality student-athletes.”

He will continue to coach the men’s basketball program.

“It’s going to be a task being on double duty,” he admitted, but knows he has a lot of support at the College and in the community.

Before joining the College as the men’s basketball coach, he was the director of basketball operations at Longwood University (2017-18), and a graduate assistant basketball coach at Mount St. Mary’s University (2016-17). He also has experience as an assistant high school basketball coach, an AAU basketball coach and at numerous basketball and football camps and clinics. His father, Ben Moore, coached basketball for nearly 30 years in the Peninsula District.

Moore, the graduation coach at Heritage High School, lives in Newport News with his wife and their daughter.

Angela Jackson, a former Gators men’s and women’s basketball coach, had been the interim athletics director.

The College currently fields three intercollegiate teams – baseball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. Following softball and women’s volleyball in 2022-23, two more teams will be added for the 2023-24 academic year, and two more for 2024-25. The College is examining which sports teams to add after the 2022-23 year. Possibilities include soccer, track and field, and cross country.

 

Hopper, Spady Win Yorktown Freedom Memorial Day Run 8K

A couple of local running veterans, Roger Hopper and Maria Spady, won the overall races at this morning's Yorktown Freedom Run.

Hopper paced the field with a time of 25:36 (5:09 per mile), while Spady's course-record mark of 30:27 translated to a 6:08 per mile. Both runners captured their titles by more then a minute.

Thomas Hicks and Christine Fernandez, both of Virginia Beach won the men's and women's master races, with Hicks breaking 30 minutes (29:52) and Fernandez just missing the 35-minute barrier (35:24).

Along with the winners, three other age group marks were also snapped. For women nine & under, a new age group record was set by Isabella Strumke, 8 of Toano, VA with a time of 37:12, besting the previous age group record time of 42:35 set by Anna Blackston in 2021.

For Men 10-14, Jack Strumke, 12, also of Toano, VA, set an age group record with a time of 34:34 bettering the mark of 34:37 set by Hayato Hasegawa in 2017.

For Men 25-29, second Overall Male, Zachary Helm, 27 of Norfolk, VA set a record with a time of 26:33, beating the time of 27:06 set by Hopper in 2019. 

One hundered and sixty-nine runners completed the course.
