Week 5 was not a good one for some of Northern Virginia’s undefeated teams, several of which were throttled in Friday night action.
South Lakes, arguably the best team in Fairfax County on Thursday, suffered a 30-14 loss at the hands of Centreville, despite doing a good job of keeping Wildcat running back Bassie Kanu in check.
Others weren’t as fortunate. West Springfield, mistakenly neglected in this column as a 3-0 team last week, didn’t live to see a fourth week without a loss as Westfield rambled to a 45-7 stomping of the Spartans. Yorktown was also dismissed from the undefeated ranks in unfavorable fashion as Lake Braddock earned its first win of the season with a 37-6 thrashing of the Patriots.
Hayfield and North Stafford also dropped their first game of the season, but not without a fight as their contests turned into instant classics. The Hawks battled back and forth with South County before falling 31-28, while the Wolverines gave Massaponax all it could handle before ending up with the short side of a 49-45 decision.
However, Broad Run (5-0), Mount Vernon (5-0), Colonial Forge (5-0), Eastern View (5-0), Stone Bridge (4-0), Stafford (5-0), Woodbridge (4-0), George Mason (4-0) and Flint Hill (3-0) kept their perfect marks in check. Flint Hill’s win was especially impressive as the Huskies knocked off defending VISAA champion Collegiate 41-28 behind almost 400 yards of rushing and receiving by Jordan Houston.
In the cases of Mount Vernon and Stafford, the Majors, under coach Monty Fritts, reached 5-0 for the first time since 1986, while Mo Hampton’s Indians have created a first for Stafford which has never won its first five games.
Culpeper’s Eastern View, behind their two-way sparkplug D’Ago Hunter, has beaten its five opponents by an average of 42 points.
South County 31, Hayfield 28
In the battle between wide receivers Dillon Spalding of South County and Brian Cobbs of Hayfield, it was Spalding and his Stallions who emerged victorious on Friday, as South County edged the Hawks 31-28.
Spalding’s nine-yard touchdown run gave his team a 31-21 lead in the fourth quarter and iced the win. Before that, the uncommitted Spalding scored on a 23-yard reception from Michael Tull in the first quarter, and 97-yarder in the second. Seth Dunn also had a 55-yard touchdown pass from Tull in the second quarter as the Stallions worked up an 18-7 halftime lead.
Cobbs, who has committed to Maryland, scored a touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Monty Byers and led the Hawks with 76 rushing yards on 11 carries. J.J. Pailin and Kylan Booker also ran for scores, while Rayjuon Pringle opened the game for Hayfield with a 96-yard kickoff return for a score.
Massaponax 49, North Stafford 45
North Stafford’s Devyn Ford ran for 237 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Devin Ravenel added 187 yards and three touchdowns, but the Wolverines were shut out in the fourth quarter and dropped a 49-45 squeaker to Massponax.
The loss drops North Stafford (4-1) from the unbeaten ranks while Massaponax is also 4-1.
Panther quarterback Ben Morley, replacing injured Sean Schickel, put on an offensive display in his second start, running for four touchdowns, including the game-winning eight-yarder in the final stanza. Morley finished the game with 135 yards, and a 31-yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Culbreath.
Centreville 30, South Lakes 14
Centreville (4-1) used a 17-point third quarter to run away from the South Lakes Seahawks, dropping the Reston school from the list of unbeatens.
Trailing 14-13 at the half, the Wildcats went to work. Presley Egbers (8-11, 86 yds. 2 TD passing) scored on a one-yard keeper, and then tossed a 10-yard scoring pass to Keenan Anunay. Griffin Greer’s 35-yard field goal finished the scoring.
Defensively, the Wildcats held the Seahawks (4-1) powerful pair of backs, Spencer Alston (58) and Albert Mensah to 87 yards, although the pair only carried 19 times. The Seahawks returned the favor, holding Bassie Kanu, who gained 315 yards in the past two games, to 34 yards on 21 carries. However, Jordan Wright picked up the slack, gaining 107 yards and a TD on 11 carries.
Stone Bridge 59, John Champe 28
Stone Bridge used a balanced running attack to gain 375 yards on the ground and defeat Champe with surprising ease. Nick Mell gained 134 yards with a pair of touchdowns, while Josh Lawyer added 61 with three scores. Kyle Tokarchik (6-81) and Tyrese Johnson (7-60) also contributed heavily and Santana Moss Jr. scored a touchdown on the ground.
Mason Tatum threw for 143 yards and a touchdown to Daniel Thompson, who caught six balls for 135 yards.
The Bulldogs remain undefeated at 4-0, while Champe (3-2) has dropped two after winning its first three games.
Battlefield 38, Chantilly 7
Jonah Seagears scored two touchdowns – one on a 17-yard pass from Graham Walker, and the other on a 50-yard punt return to lead the Bobcats (4-1) to an easy win over the winless Chargers. Aman Casey (10 carries, 68 yards) added a rushing touchdown.
Flint Hill 41, Collegiate 28
Junior Jordan Houston ran for 281 yards and three touchdowns and added two catches for 107 more, including a 95-yard touchdown pass from Miles Thompson to lead the Huskies (3-0) to a win over last season’s VISAA champion, Collegiate of Richmond.
Thompson finished the day 12 of 23 for 220 yards, while Justin Duenkel added a pair of 40-yard field goals.
Lake Braddock 37, Yorktown 6
Ben Dizon ran for 128 yards and a touchdown, while Jack Darcy threw touchdowns to Jordan Cobb (8 catches, 91 yards) and Matt Hibbner, as the Bruins (1-3) won their first game of the season over previously undefeated Yorktown (3-1)
Mount Vernon 35, Wakefield 0
Jordyn Reid carried 21 times for 121 yards and three touchdowns, while Tim Heitzel (11-20, 218 yards) threw two scoring balls to Darrien Newton (5 catches, 138 yards), as the Majors bumped their record up to 5-0 for the first time in 31 years.
Madison 38, Washington-Lee 7
Quarterback Patrick Berry completed six of seven passes for 116 yards and three touchdown passes to lead Madison (4-1) over winless W-L. Berry’s scoring passes covered four and 16 yards to John Finney and 19 to Andrew Deniken.
Bobby Williams and Brandon Walker ran for one and five-yard TD scores for the Warhawks.
Westfield 48, West Springfield 7
Gavin Kiley and Bizzet Woodley caught touchdown passes from Noah Kim and the Bulldogs cruised to a 41-point win over previously unbeaten West Springfield.
With the win, the Dogs are still unbeaten at 4-0. Kim (eight rushed, 58 yards) also ran for two touchdowns.
Stafford 21, Mountain View 17
Lovell Armstead scored the game-winning touchdown on an 18-yard screen pass from Jalen Smith to push the Indians to its first 5-0 start in school history.
Armstead accounted for all three of Stafford’s touchdowns and finished the contest with 210 yards on the ground. Stafford gained 475 yards and will square off against 4-1 North Stafford next Friday.
