Northern Virginia Week 8 High School Football Recap - Yorktown's Hanson Wins 250th

This weekend’s “Game of the Week” didn’t quite live up to expectations, but did see one more team knocked from the unbeaten ranks as Freedom (7-0), behind A.J. Felton, stormed past previously undefeated Woodbridge 41-14.

Otherwise, Westfield (7-0), Colonial Forge (8-0), Eastern View (8-0), Broad Run (7-0), Flint Hill (6-0), and Stone Bridge (7-0), are still perfect, and each team won convincingly, with Westfield’s 34-14 win over Oakton being the only game that didn’t finish with a running clock.

Lake Braddock appears to be back on track, winning its fourth straight game after opening the season with three losses. Robinson defeated Fairfax 31-7 to earn its fourth victory, matching last season’s total.

Among the one-loss teams, Battlefield, North Stafford and South Lakes are no surprise. Mount Vernon is solid at 6-1 after a 5-6 campaign in 2016, but Marshall and Yorktown, 5-6 and 4-6 last season, are also rolling along at 6-1. The Patriots’ 31-20 win over Langley last weekend also marked a milestone – Coach Bruce Hanson’s 250^th win.

Freedom 41, Woodbridge 14

This game was supposed to be closer. Freedom quarterback A.J. Felton personally made sure it wasn’t.

Felton ran for four scores, and threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Erik Surratt as the Eagles (7-0) quickly closed the door of opportunity on the Vikings, building up a 21-0 halftime lead, and then answering Woodbridge’s 14-point rally with three more scores.

Felton ran for 190 yards on 11 carries, including scoring runs of 65, 57 and 47 yards. Woodbridge, whose defense entered the game with an 6.7 points per game average, allowed one more point than they had the entire season, as the Eagles ground out 378 yards, with Felton adding 147 more through the air.

Jason Hawkins returned an Antevious Jackson 70 yards for the Eagles other score. Jackson, who had thrown 10 touchdowns in the past two games, only tossed one on Friday, as part of a six of 24 passing night for 53-yards, replete with three interceptions.

Woodbridge dropped their first game of the season and now stands at 6-1.

Colonial Forge 42, Stafford 7

The Eagles maintained their claim as the other top football team south of the Occoquan River with a 42-7 drubbing of Stafford on Friday.

Ethan Garwood completed 15 of 20 passes for 304 yards and four touchdowns to pace Forge (8-0), who built up a 35-0 lead at the intermission.

Two of Garwood’s TD passes went to D.J. Dennis, who finished the night with five receptions for 113 yards. Zack Kindel grabbed a 76-yard TD pass, while Josh Sarratt was the recipient of the other scoring ball – a 34-yarder in the first quarter. Liam Kauthen added a five-yard scoring run.

The Indians, who opened the season 5-0, have now lost two straight, and avoided a shutout when Jalen Smith connected with Landon Woodson for a 50-yard score midway through the final quarter.

Yorktown 31, Langley 20

The Patriots held on to their share of the Liberty District lead, while giving their head coach Bruce Hanson his 250^th career win on Friday.

Davis Patterson scored by air and ground. Patterson’s eight-yard TD reception from Will Porter helped Yorktown gain a 21-7 halftime edge, while a 59-yard scoring run in the second half added insurance points for Hanson, whose career record after 38 seasons is 250-163-2, with 220 wins coming during his 32 years at the Arlington school.

Tanner Wall scored on a 23-yard run, while Adam Luncher added an eight-yarder. Luncher also booted a 28-yard field goal to close the Patriots’ scoring.

Madison 49, Chantilly 7

Madison had little trouble against a winless Charger team, pounding out over 300 yards and five touchdowns on the ground to decimate Chantilly 49-7.

Brandon Walker led the Warhawks with 98 yards and a score, while Casey Koshuta added 55 yards and two TD’s. Bobby Williams and Pepe Conforti also scored on touchdown runs.

Patrick Berry completed only four passes, but they went for 115 yards, including a 42-yard scoring throw to John Finney.

With the win, Madison’s record improves to 6-2.

Marshall 49, George Mason 8

Quarterback Andrew Margiotta ran for three scores, while Brandon Gonzales, LaRon Allen, Kyle Burke and Aidan Platter also found the end zone on the ground as the Statesmen improved to 6-1 in a non-conference win over George Mason, their “down the street” Route 7 rival who started their season 5-0.

North Stafford 41, Mountain View 9

Devin Ravenel ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third to lead the Wolverines over Mountain View.

Ravenel completed seven of 10 passes for 150 yards, including the scoring play, a 42-yard pass to Holt Eagen. Ben Camden booted two field goals, while Devyn Ford added 133 yards and a touchdown rushing for North Stafford (6-1).

Flint Hill 42, Bishop Ireton 0

For the second straight week, Flint Hill shut out its opponent, this time blanking the winless Cardinals 42-0.

The Huskies (6-0) will remain in their #1 ranking in the VISAA Division I polls. Miles Thompson threw for 158 yards on 10 of 15 passing, along with four touchdown passes. Elijah Wasson caught two of the scores, while Mark Lewis and Jaylin Hertz grabbed the other touchdowns. Jordan Houston, who gained over 1,000 yards rushing in the first five games, was “held” to 111, as the Huskies built up a 35-0 halftime lead and played the rest of the game with a running clock.

Ireton, only two years removed from VISAA playoff action, has lost 15 of its last 17 games.

Woodgrove 28, Dominion 12

Bailey Burton threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns as Woodgrove pulled away from its Loudoun rival in the fourth quarter.

Dominion (4-3) pulled to within 14-12 in the second quarter on George Richardson’s second touchdown reception from Thomas Jarman. After a scoreless third stanza, the Wolverines pulled ahead on Ben Castellano’s 41-yard touchdown reception. Burton scored the game’s final points on a one-yard keeper for a TD.

Woodgrove (5-2) will face Heritage (6-2) in a crucial matchup next Friday.

Northern Virginia Week 7 High School Football Recap - Slade Scores 8 TD's In 64-35 Win Over Colgan

Week 7 of Northern Virginia football action was highlighted by jaw-dropping performances,
including one from a Hayfield Hawk named Monty, who threw seven touchdowns and knocked Mount Vernon from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Madison and Westfield battled in the trenches, combining for only 16 points, a number that was tripled by Hylton’s Ricky Slade, who scored eight touchdowns on his own against Colgan as they ran away with a 64-35 win.

Freedom (49-13 over Forest Park) and Woodbridge (48-0 over Potomac) both won on Friday, setting up a battle of 6-0 teams next weekend at Freedom to determine the best team in Woodbridge.

All of the other undefeated teams held their status, and now Colonial Forge (7-0), Eastern View (7-0), Broad Run (6-0), Stone Bridge (6-0), George Mason (5-0) and Flint Hill (5-0) also sport unblemished records.

And the most surprising team in Northern Virginia remains the Marshall Statesman, whose record under Coach George Masten is now 5-1 after nipping Annandale 41-40. West Springfield is 5-1 a year after finishing 2-8, and they manhandled Fairfax 46-14 on Friday. Suddenly their game against South County next week could assure the Spartans of a playoff spot, and push the Stallions to the brink of extinction where playoffs are concerned.

Westfield 10, Madison 6

A 25-yard touchdown pass from Noah Kim to Taylor Morin broke open a 3-all tie and the Bulldogs held on to defeat James Madison 10-6 to remain unbeaten.

Eugene Asante led the ground game with 31 carries for 130 yards. Kim completed 11 of 19 passes for 90 yards, while Morin caught six balls for 49. For Madison (5-2), Brandon Walker carried 21 times for 126 yards, while David Louden booted two field goals, both from 35 yards.

Freedom 49, Forest Park 13

A.J. Felton tossed three touchdowns and ran for two others as Freedom rolled to an easy win over Forest Park on Friday.

Felton passed for 275 yards and scrambled for 103, as Freedom’s offense totaled 552. Erik Surratt caught three touchdowns for the Eagles while Bobby Jones-Scales added the other.

Woodbridge 48, Potomac 0

Antevious Jackson threw for five touchdowns, two to Andrew Hardin and Dashaun Jenkins, as Woodbridge stayed undefeated, blanking Potomac 48-0.

Corey James caught Jackson’s other touchdown pass, while Jenkins also returned an interception for a pick-six score.

Jackson finished with 17 of 18 completions for 304 yards, and has now thrown for 10 touchdowns in the past two games.

Hayfield 63, Mt. Vernon 41

Monty Byers threw seven touchdowns to lead the Hawks to a decisive win over the previously undefeated majors.

Byers connected with scoring passes to five different receivers including Brian Cobbs, who scored on passes from five and 17 yards. Kylan Booker added 116 yards rushing on 15 carries with a pair of rushing touchdowns for Hayfield, who raised their mark to 4-2.

Major quarterback Tim Heitzel threw for three scores and ran for two others as Mount Vernon fell to 5-1.

Stone Bridge 47, Briar Woods 7

Mason Tatum threw for four touchdowns, three to Daniel Thompson, as Stone Bridge maintained its perfect record and #2 ranking on the VHSL Reference ratings, skating past Briar Woods 47-7.

Thompson caught four passes for 81 yards, while Tyrese Johnson added four for 61 and a touchdown. Nick Mell led all Bulldog rushers with 119 yards and a score.


Hylton 64, Colgan 35

Ricky Slade put on a rushing clinic on Friday, carrying 13 times for 343 yards and five touchdowns as Hylton rolled over Colgan 64-35.

Slade also caught a pass for a score and returned two kickoffs for TD’s, giving the Penn State-bound senior a school record eight touchdowns for the game, tying his own mark. Along with a two-point conversion, Slade scored 50 points by himself.

Marshall 41, Annandale 40

The Statesmen needed an overtime period, but nipped the Atoms as quarterback Andrew Margiotta scored on a five-yard run.

Brandon Gonzales-Pinto led Marshall (56-1) with 178 yards rushing, while Aidan Platter added three catches for 67, including a 33-yard scoring reception.

Colonial Forge 36, Massaponax 7

The Eagles were scoreless in the first half, but ran away in the second with a five touchdown effort to spank Massaponax 36-7. 

Ethan Garwood completed 13 of 15 passes for 228 yards, including a touchdown to Zack Kindel. Ernesto Bowen (107 yards), Laim Kauthen and Josh Sarratt scored rushing touchdowns for Colonial Forge, who improved to 7-0.

Eastern View 63, Chancellor 7

The Cyclones (7-0) built up a 42-0 halftime lead and cruised to an easy home win in Culpeper.

Trey Holmes rushed for 165 yards, while Eastern View scored on every possession except its last. Junior quarterback Matt Lowery ran for a touchdown from 17 yards.

Flint Hill 49, Sidwell Friends 6

Jordan Houston passed the 1,000 yard rushing mark in just the Huskies fifth game of the season, as the VISAA’s number one ranked team blasted the Quakers from D.C.

Houston ran for 202 yards, while quarterback Miles Thompson added 51 on the ground and passed for 100 yards on five of 11 completions with two TD’s. Houston also returned a punt 67 yards.

West Springfield 46, Fairfax 14

West Springfield upped its record to 5-1, opening up a 38-7 lead after three quarters and easily beating Fairfax 46-14.

Northern Virginia Week 6 High School Football Recap - North Stafford Tops Stafford 55-14

Few things changed in Week 6 of Northern Virginia high school football action. Only one undefeated team fell out of the ranks, when Stafford fell 55-14 to rival North Stafford. Otherwise, Colonial Forge (6-0), Eastern View (6-0), Broad Run (5-0), Mount Vernon (5-0), Stone Bridge (5-0), Woodbridge (5-0) and Flint Hill (4-0) are still perfect, although Broad Run and Mount Vernon had a free week.

Another team who remains unbeaten is Freedom-Woodbridge (5-0), who played the most exciting game of the weekend, as they built up a huge lead over Hylton, but had to hang on to survive a 48-42 nail biter.

Culpeper’s Eastern View, with a 51-11 win over Spotsylvania last weekend, has now beaten its six opponents by an average of just under 42 points.

If the VHSL-Reference rankings hold true to form, Westfield and Stone Bridge should maintain their 1-2 positions in the state, while Broad Run (#4), Colonial Forge (#6) and Madison (#9) will at least hold their spots and Centreville (#12) could bump into the top-10 after its 40-22 win over #32 West Potomac.

And the most surprising team in Northern Virginia might be the Marshall Statesman, whose record under Coach George Masten raised to 4-1 after its 47-17 win over Stuart. Annandale, 3-7 last season, is 3-2 with its 48-20 victory over Washington-Lee. West Springfield is 3-1 one season after finishing 2-8, while Fairfax is 3-2, after going winless in 2016. Annandale and West Springfield do battle next week, so one team will earn its fourth win.

Freedom-Woodbridge 48, Hylton 42

The Eagles bolted to an early 28-7 lead in the first quarter against their county rival, but watched as Hylton clawed back. First, Ra’Quan Johnson returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Later, Ricky Slade hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass, and the F-W lead was down to a single touchdown.

Slade, a Penn State commit, was bamboozled by the Eagle defense and gained a season-low minus-four yards on seven carries.

The Bulldogs maintained their momentum, with the help of its defense. Eric Roy returned a pass 65 yards for a pick-six, giving Hylton its first lead of the game at 35-28. But A.J. Felton fired the game’s deciding pass, hitting Eric Surratt down the sideline, and Surratt kept his feet in bounds to score from 33 yards out.

North Stafford 55, Stafford 14

Devyn Ford ran for five touchdowns and 117 yards as North Stafford crushed its rival to knock the Indians from the undefeated ranks.

Four of Ford’s touchdowns came in the first half as the Wolverines (5-1) worked up a 35-0 halftime lead to put the game’s outcome in certainty before the second half kickoff. North Stafford tallied 423 yards, with 313 coming from its ground game.

North Stafford set the tone early, scoring on its first drive, a 61-yard effort, capped Ford’s three-yard run. As Ford told John Hollis of the Free-Lance Star, “The first drive always sets the tone for the game.”

Westfield 46, Patriot 33

Eugene Asante and Taylor Morin scored twice to lead the state’s top-ranked team to a 33-7 cushion after three quarters as the Bulldogs stayed unbeaten.

Through six games, Kyle Simmons’ team is 6-0, and looking better than at the same point last season when they were 4-2, but slumping. That team won the 6A state title, and this year’s squad is in strong position to win a three-peat.

Asante (24 rushes, 195 yards) scored on runs of 59 and 25 yards. Morin caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Noah Kim (9-12, 140 yds. 2 TD), and also ran back a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. Kim scored the game’s first touchdown on a one-yard keeper.

Patriot running back Ike Onwuka ran for three touchdowns, from 28, 20 and one yard.

Robinson 42, Hayfield 7

Another surprising team this season has been the Rams of Robinson, who picked apart a strong Hayfield team with relative ease last Thursday.

Robinson (3-2) scored all of its points on the ground, netting 323 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Asa Ballenger (14 carries, 44 yards) scored three times, on a pair of one-yard runs and a three-yarder. Reid Scarborough (18-84) tacked on two scores, while leading rusher Jacquez Stewart scored the other TD on a 15-yard scamper. Stewart gained 94 yards on 14 carries.

On defense, Robinson held the explosive Hawk offense to 135 yards, and standout receiver Brian Cobbs netted just 32 yards on four catches.

Colonial Forge 42, Brooke Point 14

Ethan Garwood threw two touchdowns and ran for another as Colonial Forge upped its record to 6-0 with a 28-point win over their Stafford rival.

Garwood (10-15, 187 yds. 2 TD, int.) found D.J. Dennis for a 43-yard touchdown pass, helping the Eagles build a 35-7 halftime lead. Paten Rodier caught the other scoring pass, from four yards.

Josh Sarratt ran for a 22-yard score and at cornerback recovered a fumble and returned it 45 yards for the Forge’s final score.

Annandale 48, Washington-Lee 20

Tyler Rush lived up to his name, gaining 275 yards on the ground and a touchdown, while Devin Gill threw for three touchdowns, two to Ahmed Ibrahim. Alexander Cromwell added a 25-yard interception return for the Atoms (3-2).

Flint Hill 50, St. Albans 0

On Saturday, the VISAA top-ranked Huskies stormed to a blowout of the DC private school.

Jordan Houston ran for 202 yards and three touchdowns, giving the junior over 800 ground yards for the season. Miles Thompson completed six of seven passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns, with scoring strikes to Mark Lewis (three catches, 102 yards), Jamarian Hawkins and a 73-yard bomb to Justice Ellison.

James Shumway recovered a fumble for a touchdown for the Huskies (4-0).

Madison 26, South County 16

Brandon Walker carried 31 times for 103 yards and a touchdown, and the Warhawks handled South County in a non-district game.

Patrick Berry completed 12 of 21 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns, one to John Finney (3-96) and the other to Andrew Deniken (3-60). In all, the Warhawks (5-1) gained 346 yards.

Marshall 47, Stuart 17

Andrew Margiotta ran for 262 yards and two touchdowns to spark a Statesmen ground attack that totaled 582 yards and six scores to lead Marshall over Stuart 47-17.

Brandon Gonzales added 198 rushing yards and two TD’s while Colin Nininger tacked on 97 and a score, with Leron Allen adding the sixth run for a TD for Marshall (4-1).

Centreville 40, West Potomac 22

Centreville raised its record to 5-1 behind a ground attack that gained well over 325 yards and five scores.

Bassie Kanu led the Wildcats with 165 yards and a TD. Jordan Wright (16-89) and quarterback Presley Egbers each ran for two touchdowns, while Tre Maxwell ran back an interception 12 yards for the Cats other score.

Dominion 56, Riverside 7

Thomas Jarman threw for six touchdowns and 330 yards as the Titans rolled over Riverside 56-7.

Trey Hayes (3-120) and George Richardson (4-102) both caught two touchdown passes, while Alex Wertz caught his lone pass for a 50-yard TD and Kyle Kivinski grabbed Jarman’s other moneyball. Dominion also ran for 137 yards, with Wertz’ 72 leading the way for Karl Buckwalter’s 4-2 squad.
