Week 4 of Northern Virginia high school football was a Friday of firsts, on both sides of the win-loss column.
The Colgan Sharks won their first game ever in stylish fashion, smashing Osbourn Park 61-24. On a side note, Friday night was explosive as at least five teams were involved in a game with one team scoring at least 60 points. Mount Vernon led the charge, ringing up a monstrous 79 points in a 52-point win over Washington-Lee. North Stafford tallied 70 while bashing Roanoke’s William Fleming 70-27, and Tuscarora scored 62 in its 22-point win over Woodgrove. On the negative side, Park View allowed 75 to Central-Woodstock while scoring 21.
Cortez Whiting and the Osbourn Eagles won their first game as the Eagles toppled Gar-Field 28-18. Robert E. Lee and Edison also enjoyed their first 2017 victory, while Madison, John Champe, Battlefield and Hylton suffered their first losses of the season.
The number of remaining undefeated teams is quickly dwindling, but includes Broad Run (4-0), Colonial Forge (4-0), South Lakes (4-0), Westfield (3-0), Yorktown (3-0) and George Mason (3-0). Perhaps the most unlikely team of the bunch is Mo Hampton’s group at Stafford, who are 4-0, their latest undefeated mark in over four decades.
Broad Run 39, John Champe 34
This matchup of undefeated teams provided for the matchup of the night. Broad Run opened up an early 14-0 first quarter lead on a one-yard rushing TD from Tim Baldwin and four-yard keeper from quarterback Mitch Griffis. Griffis (37 yards) and Baldwin (63) added two long running scores as Broad Run took a 26-14 halftime lead.
Daniel Antwi’s 25-yard touchdown run for Champe closed the gap to six at 26-20, but the Knights failed to convert the two-point conversion. From there, Baldwin struck again with a 55-yard scoring run. Champe quarterback Cameron Parson answered the challenge by completing a 34-yard TD pass to close the margin to 39-34 with eight minutes remaining. The defense took over at that point keeping Champe and star running back Carl Garmon III out of the end zone to secure a key win at home.
The schedule gets no easier for Coach Jason Dawson and Champe as they face Stone Bridge next week.
Stone Bridge 35, Madison 10
Daniel Thompson caught nine passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs made surprisingly easy work of the Madison Warhawks in another battle of unbeatens.
Mason Tatum connected with Thompson on scoring passes of 80, 31 and 78 yards. He also tossed a 12-yards touchdown pass to Mark Williams and finished the evening with 12 of 21 completions for 301 yards and four scores.
The Bulldog defense held Madison’s one-two running punch of Casey Koshuta and Brandon Walker to just 82 yards on 28 carries, although John Finney did catch six balls for 128 yards. But Stone Bridge managed to keep all three and wide receiver Johnny Hecht (3 catches, 70 yards) out of the end zone as they improved to 3-0.
South Lakes 42, Dominion 10
Spencer Alston blasted for three touchdown runs of over 65 yards as the Seahawks destroyed the Titans.
Alston rushed for 303 yards on just seven carries, scoring from 80, 80 and 68 yards to provide South Lakes with the impetus to extend their lead from 14-10 to 35-10. Running partner Albert Mensah (10 carries, 101 yards) added the Seahawks first two touchdowns on one and ten-yard runs, and Xavier May’s three-yard breakthrough completed the scoring for South Lakes.
In all, the Seahawks ran for 439 yards on 31 carries, as they improved to 4-0.
Colonial Forge 37, Hylton 34
The Eagle defense made three crucial stops on Penn State commit running back Ricky Slade in overtime to seal a narrow comeback victory.
Forge trailed 34-21 entering the fourth quarter. However, the combination of Ethan Garwood to Zack Kindel proved to be fatal as they connected for scores twice in the final quarter on four and five-yard passing plays to even the game at 34, forcing overtime.
Jadon Redding’s 27-yard field goal gave the Eagles the early edge in the extra stanza, setting up Hylton’s last stand. Slade was stopped three times from first-and-ten, setting up a Hylton field goal attempt which was blocked as the Eagles raised their record to 4-0.
Slade rushed for 238 yards and three TD’s on 27 carries. On the Forge side, Garwood overcame three interceptions, including one that was returned 96 yards for a score by Jordan Davis, to finish the night 30 of 40 for 274 yards. Kindel’s two touchdown passes contributed to a nine-catch, 65-yard night, while D.J. Dennis added eight for 76.
Stafford 28, King George 6
Lovell Armstead ran for two second-half touchdowns and finished the game with 159 yards on the ground as Stafford easily defeated the Foxes 28-6. Landon Woodson and Justin Toler added touchdown receptions from Jalen Smith and the Indians are 4-0 for the first time since the early 1970’s.
Mount Vernon 79, Washington-Lee 27
Mount Vernon is also 4-0 for the first time in just over 30 years as they collected 52 first-half points to outrun the Generals.
A 98-yard kickoff return by Darrien Newton gave the Majors a 24-21 edge after the first quarter and Mount Vernon added 28 more points in the second quarter to activate the rout. Sophomore running back Jordyn Reid ran for three touchdowns while Tim Heitzel found senior WR Damien Burke for two passing scores.
Hayfield 30, Fairfax 24
Brian Cobbs scored three touchdowns as the Hawks (3-0) remained undefeated with a win over the Rebels who are now 2-2 after a 0-10 season in 2016.
Edison 19, McLean 7
The Eagles, under new coach Chad Lewis, won their first game of the season over winless McLean (0-3) as Brandon Alliata and Adam Abu-Jamous caught touchdown passes from Peyton Jones. Charles Blake ran for the other Eagle touchdown, but gathered 153 receiving yards on six catches.
Yorktown 32, W.T. Woodson 27
The Patriots’ Will Porter threw three touchdowns, two to Davis Patterson, as Yorktown moved to 3-0 for the first time in five years. Porter’s 31-yard touchdown to Tanner Wall (9 catches, 103 yards) served as the game-winning score. Adam Luncher added 119 rushing yards and a touchdown as coach Bruce Hanson won his 247th career game in a 32-year career at the Arlington school.
Centreville 33, Forest Park 15
Bassie Kanu ran for 180 yards and scored twice on the ground, while catching Presley Egbers’ only touchdown pass as the Wildcats improved to 2-1. Daequan Williams added 96 yards on the ground and a touchdown as Centreville ran for 370 yards.
