#10 LAFAYETTE 24, WARHILL 6
JAMES CITY --- A week after dismantling Grafton, the Warhill Lions were dealt a toxic shot of reality, losing to perennial Bay Rivers District powerhouse Lafayette 24-6 on Friday at Wanner Stadium.
Lafayette jumped on the “visiting” Warhill team, gaining an early 14-0 lead in the first eight minutes of play, but struggling for the rest of the first half. While they gained 210 yards on the ground, their brutal running attack took its best shape on the Rams’ final drive, as Breon Stokes (14 carries, 97 yards) toted the rock five times for 42 yards, setting up a three-yard rushing score by Izaiyah Gray.
The Lions had a chance to even the game, marching to the Ram 27 midway through the second quarter and trailing 14-6. The Lafayette defense held tough, holding Warhill to three incomplete passes and regaining possession. Their own ensuing drive covered 55 yards, but Aidan Gerda’s 35-yard field goal attempt turned into an incomplete pass right back to the kicker after an errant snap.
Gerda would provide a 40-yarder in the third quarter to nudge the Rams to an 11-point lead.
Two Jael Love interceptions kept the Lions at bay in the third quarter, while Warhill’s Elijah White picked off a pass, and scored on a 25-yard pass from Carson Strickland to put Warhill on the board. White showed a great open field running display on his touchdown, weaving through four Lafayette defenders for the score.
The game was evenly matched in the first half, with the difference being a 67-yard pass from Talen Leach to Cyler Brooks. Stokes added a ten-yard rushing TD on a jet sweep to the left to complete the first quarter scoring.
