HAMPTON 33, WARWICK 18

HAMPTON -- A breathtaking 66-yard touchdown run by Hampton’s Dazz Newsome sparked the host Crabbers, who defeated Warwick 33-18 on Friday at Darling Stadium.

With the win, Hampton will host Indian River next weekend. The Braves defeated Bethel 33-14 in Chesapeake.

Leading 17-12 early in the third quarter, and facing third-and-4 at their 34, Newsome took a handoff from Crabber quarterback D.J. Nunn and headed right. Finding no room to run, Newsome headed back toward the middle of the field, and began weaving his way through Raider defenders. One defender dove and got a hand on Newsome’s foot, causing the senior back to stumble forward at midfield. Newsome continued falling forward, but maintained his balance over the course of eight shaky steps, before regaining his posture and accelerating to the end zone, leaving a sea of Warwick players in his dust.

For the night, Newsome gained 284 yards on 21 carries, plus scoring all four of Hampton’s touchdowns, as well as a pair of two-point conversions, accounting for 28 of the Crabbers points.

Hampton (10-1) scored on its first possession, marching 71 yards on five plays. A 34-yard pass from D.J. Nunn to Jaquarious Bellamy set up Newsome, who shaked and baked through the middle of the Raider defense for a 30-yard score.

Warwick blocked a field goal attempt on the Crabbers’ next drive, but Newsome struck again on the next drive, scoring from 24 yards out, and Hampton led 14-0 after the first quarter.

The Raiders caught a break as a 41-yard punt by Connor Murphy drove Newsome backwards to his own 10-yard line. The ball bounced off his raised hand and was recovered by Tayshaun Porter at the 11. Raider quarterback Tzion Lucas called his own number twice, running for six yards on the first run, and, after a fake handoff, running up the middle to score from the 5.

Warwick’s special teams came up big again later in the second quarter as Deandre Livingston caught a Crabber punt at his 30 and outran the Hampton defenders for a 70-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion pass failed, but Warwick trailed only 14-12 until the half’s final play, when Valenzuela drilled a 33-yard field goal, made easier by two movement penalties by Warwick, which brought the ball ten yards closer.

The Raiders (4-7) were hamstruck by penalties throughout the game, drawing ten flags for 70 yards in the first half alone.

Virginia Peninsula Game of Week #11 - Jamestown Earns Third Win of Season, Edges York 24-21

JAMESTOWN 24, YORK 21

JAMES CITY – Kemonte Frye rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries, while Demarjia Lewis caught a 28-yard touchdown pass and intercepted two passes to lead the hosts to a 24-21 win at Wanner Stadium.

Frye’s effort undermined a three touchdown performance by York’s Jayden Flood-Brown. In the second quarter, the freshman running back ran for a seven-yard score. On the second play of Jamestown’s ensuing drive, Flood-Brown picked off a Hunter Brittain pass and dashed 29 yards into the end zone, cutting the Eagles’ lead to 17-14 before halftime.

After Frye’s second touchdown, Ramsay Hayyat found Tri Cartwright for a 43-yard pass play, which set up Flood-Brown’s one-yard plunge, cutting the lead to 24-21 with 1:33 left in the game. But a York player touched the ensuing onside kick before it traveled 10 yards, giving Jamestown the ball and sealing the game for the Eagles (3-7).

Cole Lytle led the Falcons with 63 rushing yards on 13 carries, as York finished the season 1-9.

Virginia Peninsula Game of Week # 10 - Phoebus Gets Back on Track With 44-0 Win Over Denbigh

PHOEBUS 44, DENBIGH 0

HAMPTON – The Phoebus Phantoms used a stiff running game and overwhelming defense to topple the Patriots 44-0 at home.

With the win, Phoebus (7-2) gained a measure of normalcy after being shut out in their last two games. The Phantoms also maintained their #1 seed in the 3A East rankings.

The Phoebus defense took control of the game from the start, holding the Patriots to just two first downs and 32 total yards. Special teams also played a factor. Junior defensive end Juan Purdie blocked Denbigh’s first punt, which rolled into the end zone and was ruled a safety, giving Phoebus its first two points.

A leaping 19-yard catch by Jonathan Gregory set up the Phantoms next score, a five-yard run by Daniel Wright. Two possessions later, Phoebus had its best running drive of the half, gaining 64 yards on three rushes – 24 from Wright, followed by a 5, and then 35-yard run by Daequan Fleming, who found a gap in the line of scrimmage and zigzagged his way through the Patriot defense into the end zone. Wright finished the first half scoring with his second touchdown, from six yards.

The Phantoms defense was stalwart in the opening half, holding Denbigh to a single first down, and 21 total yards. Offensively, the Phantoms carried the ball 37 times for 252 yards. Wright led Phoebus with 78 yards on 11 carries, while Fleming added 69 yards on seven carries. Andre Jackson scored on a 29-yard reception from Iziah McNair, who also added a rushing touchdown, with a one-yard quarterback sneak on Phoebus’ first possession of the second half.

With the loss, Denbigh finished the regular season with a 3-7 record.

Virginia Peninsula Game of Week #9 - Heritage Raises Record to 7-1 With Close Win Over Kecoughtan

HERITAGE 28, KECOUGHTAN 20

HAMPTON – Roy Johnson III ran for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns to boost Heritage past Kecoughtan 28-20 at Darling Stadium.

With the win, Heritage (7-1, 6-1 Peninsula) maintained a share of second place in the Peninsula District with Woodside. The two teams will play each other next Friday night at Todd Stadium.

“We made a lot of mistakes today, and Kecoughtan put us into some adverse situations,” said Hurricane coach George Massenburg. Thinking ahead to the two final regular season games against the Wolverines, and then Phoebus on November 4th, Massenburg added, “We will have to work on our blocking schemes and need better tackling.”

Heritage, behind quarterback Darius Price, in his third week filling in for injured Jeremiah Boyd, had success moving the ball as the Canes gained 316 yards, with Price completing 8 of 17 passes for 135 yards. According to Massenburg, Boyd is healthy again and will start next week against Woodside.

After Heritage failed to gain a first down on their first possession, the Warriors started out strong. Alternating quarterbacks, they kept the Hurricane defense off-guard while cobbling together a nine-play, 70-yard drive, which was capped by Jonathan Melvin, who took the shotgun snap, and snaked through the Heritage defense for a 10-yard score.

The Hurricanes reacted quickly. A 21-yard pass from Price to Amonyae Watson moved the ball to the Warrior 18, and was enhanced by a personal foul penalty on Kecoughtan, which moved the ball inside the 10-yard line. From there, Heritage pounded four running plays into the Kecoughtan defensive line, with the fourth, a two-yard smash by Johnson finding the end zone. Khari Greene’s extra point tied the score at seven.

Kecoughtan (2-7, 2-6 Peninsula) started having trouble moving the ball, gaining only six yards on their next two drives. But they caught a break on special teams as a Warrior punt sailed over the Heritage returner’s head, but was touched by the Canes and recovered by the Warriors on the Heritage 3. On the first play from scrimmage, Melvin banged across the goal line for his second score.

Heritage regained the ball with just less than two minutes left in the half, and Price quickly went to work. A 10-yard run by Timothy Payne was followed with a 31-yard pass to Watson, who ran the ball down to the Warrior 14. Two Johnson runs gained eight yards and set up a six-yard slant pass form Price to Craig Long to narrow the Warrior lead to 14-13. However, the extra point was blocked and Kecoughtan took the single point edge into halftime.

Another Johnson touchdown, from three yards, gave Heritage its first lead early in the third quarter. Later in the third, Price found Payne for a 17-yard touchdown reception.
