Poquoson Among Region Wrestling Favorites This Weekend; Tabb, Heritage Look to Advance In Region 3A

The second weekend of regional championship wrestling will be chock full of matches all over Hampton Roads as four team champions will be crowned in different Virginia classifications, while 16 grapplers in each of 14 weight classes will also advance to one of two state finals at Salem Civic Center (Classes 1-3) or Virginia Beach Sports Center (Classes 4-6), which will take place next weekend. All four tournaments will take place on Saturday. Region 6A (at Oscar Smith HS) Four teams will be represented here, including 757Teamz.com's top-ranked Grassfield. The Grizzlies finished the regular season with dual-match victories over Cox and Kellam, and they are undefeated (18-0) against Virginia opponents this season. Poquoson, New Kent, Grassfield, Granby Win Region Wrestling Titles

CHESAPEAKE – After finishing runner-up in the past two Region 6A tournaments, Grassfield entered the 2024-25 season on a mission to return to the form of the team which won the region championship in 2022 and then placed third at the Class 6 state finals, the highest in school history. After Saturday’s convincing win at this year’s regionals, held on the mats at Oscar Smith High, their updated mission will now include a first-ever team state championship. Grassfield had eight wrestlers win individual titles, en route to a 100-point win over runner-up Landstown. In the process, the Grizzlies, who scored 328 team points, qualified all 14 wrestlers for the state finals, which will be held next weekend at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. “Chantilly, who may be our toughest competition, probably had 11 wrestlers qualify,” said coach Patrick Shuler, whose team is undefeated at 18-0 against in-state competition. “A couple of others have nine or ten, so we’re expecting everybody to score.” He...

While the current Black Lives Matter movement is impacting society and aiming to prompt thoughtful reflection and discussion among Americans, many of us are reminded that the fight against racism has not seen such a bold movement since 1968. As it turns out, two of the greatest athletes in the history of the Virginia Peninsula, former NFL great Leroy Keyes, and All-American track athlete Eric McCaskill, were two catalysts for one such movement - a pair of protests at their school - Purdue University.
