Three events from the previous week have solidified the top of this week’s rankings, even if the changes are minimal.
On Wednesday, #2 Great Bridge (16-2) toppled the defending state champion #3 Cox 38-32 in their regular season finale. Wildcat victors included Vince Von Bernewitz (106 pounds by decision), Xavier Kovacs (113 by pin), Tom Egley (120 by pin), Beau Lewis (157 by pin), Ayden Christian (157 by major decision), Dylan Davies (175 by technical fall), Caleb Neal (190 by technical fall) and Jayden Cuevas (285 by decision). This rivalry, considered “the best in Hampton Roads” by Great Bridge coach Steve Martin, will continue this weekend as both teams contend for the Region 5A championship at Cox High.
Lewis and Neal have been nationally ranked for most of this season, and Neal will attempt to make VHSL history later this month as he chases down his fourth consecutive state title at the Class 5 Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
“With regionals just around the corner, this win proves that our guys are enjoying the aspect of competing at a high level and having fun with the sport. Proud of our wrestlers for leaving it all on the mat tonight,” said Martin, after the Cox win.
Two district championships have been completed. In the Bay Rivers District, #4 Poquoson got past long-time rival New Kent 282-254 to win the team championship.
In the process, the Islanders won eight weight classes. Kam Harrell won the 106-lb division by technical fall, and Brayden Bunting followed with a 9-7 decision, both over New Kent wrestlers.
Logan Keese captured the 120-lb weight class with a fall (2:42) over Isaac Drummond of Warhill. Jared Goodson, the outstanding wrestler of the year, won by fall (:58) over Xavier Hurley of Lafayette. Reed Booth claimed the 150 title with a fall over Grafton’s Harrison Kent.
Christian Leonard won by fall (4:20) over Gabriel Crowe-Aguilar of Grafton and Nathaniel Quiroz nipped Tabb’s Amauri Lymon of Tabb in a 4-3 decision.
Other local winners included Jayden Wright of Tabb, who won by technical fall at 126 and Cre’Shawn Keitt (Bruton) who took the 215 title with a win by fall.
#6 Granby (18-3) finished its regular season with wins over Churchland (69-6), Norview (71-6), and Maury (66-16), and then won its fourth consecutive Eastern District championship with the Comets’ 215-pounder Tijuan Powell scored perhaps the meet’s most notable victory. Granby will next wrestle at the Region 5B championships.
The Region 4A championship will also be held this Saturday at Churchland High.
